Our longest serving volunteer

ROBIN HALL

Michael Moon has been working as a volunteer at Plaw Hatch Farm since 2009. He normally comes once a week, on a Thursday. When Michael started working here, Tom Ventham taught him a number of tasks including collecting eggs, cleaning hen houses and he also helped harvesting potatoes. In recent years he has been busy tidying up around the car park and shop area, weeding and cleaning out drains.

Michael has a great love of animals and he now regularly helps with milking the cows on Thursday afternoons. Alongside this his tasks include helping to prepare each cow for milking by applying the pre-dip foam, and dipping the teats with iodine after milking. During the summer he helps to gather and herd the cows from the fields which is a great help on a hot afternoon. He has a lovely manner with the cows and is also very conscious of the potential hazards of working with large animals.

Michael regularly cleans the milking parlour too and once a month he stays for the whole milking session after which I take him home to Nutley Hall.

As a keen Railway enthusiast, Michael can describe UK rail infrastructure, past and present, in impressive detail. He is a pleasant and patient helper and on behalf of the team here at Plaw Hatch I would like to thank him for his continued work as our longest serving volunteer.
