Why cows have horns
Robin Hall
It has long been a policy of Biodynamic husbandry to keep cattle with horns. As well as the aesthetic value, the horns have an important function in the life of the cow.
Some of our cows have damaged horns, where the outer sheath has been knocked off by accident, while others have had the horn trimmed because it was growing towards the face. In general though we leave them alone and they give each cow her distinctive appearance. There is an excellent publication from Demeter and FiBL which describes in detail the purpose and function of the horns (better than I can) and is worth a look.
