Cicely and Eliza

Cicely and Eliza are each producing about 17 litres of milk in the morning.

With the grazing season now well underway, we see a significant effect in the quantity of milk from the cows. The cows here are not normally fed extra concentrates to stimulate milk production, and so milk volumes are tied closely to the quality of the grass they are eating. Of course, it’s not just grass, as a ley (temporary pasture) will contain a variety of species including several types of grasses and clover, chicory, ribwort, and yarrow to name a few. Although the cows are fed a small ration of oats at milking time, this does little to affect milk production. It seems only fair to give them a tasty snack when they come in for milking, and in return they give us all this lovely milk.
