Flowers for the Garden
Emma Hams
The winter months give us some time to dream and make plans for the growing season ahead. I love to dream about flowers; the stunning colours and shapes are something I am already looking forward to, as well as having them to attract insects.
After the dreaming comes the planning. I started with filling the perennial beds with tulips, dahlias, echinacea and lupins. The tulips are already in the ground and when the time is right, I will plant the other varieties. The idea of these beds is that the flowers there come back in the same place every year. Tulips, echinacea and lupins over winter in the ground but we will have to dig up the dahlias in the autumn and plant them again when the dark and cold winter is gone.
There will also be annual beds, these will be filled with mixed flowers and spread over the fields. Hopefully the flower beds that are spread around will attract insects who pollinate our crops. It will be a mixture of all sorts of flowers, ones that are good for cutting and some that are just there as they are interesting for bees and other insects.
So hopefully, if dreams come true, there will be more flower bunches in the shop over the summer, and if you don’t find them there then you’ll certainly find them if you have a walk around the garden.
