Goodbye from Miriam
Miriam Fuller
A year of farming goes past incredibly quickly. When I arrived in April last year, one of the first things to happen were the cows going out, and when that time rolled round again this year so much had happened.
I spent the summer of last year working with Maya silaging, cutting hay and beginning to combine. Being out in the fields for long days, watching the grass being spread out behind the tractor, the bales rolling out of the baler and having late dinners after crazy long days, are all memories which make me smile. Unfortunately, before the harvest season was finished, I had an accident which meant I needed to take some time to recover. Although physically healthy, returning to the farm was a big step for me, but the support and warmth from everyone at Plaw Hatch was incredible.
Much of winter on a farm is routine work, no less important and, in my case, exactly what I needed. I can’t tell you the number of times Lou and I pulled ‘Dolly the Trolley’ through the chicken field, filled with buckets of grain, eggs and bags of feed; I have never been so fit, and we always made it fun! When spring finally came around and lambing was on the horizon, Gala gave Lou and I the opportunity to take on a lot more responsibility for the flock. Over those two weeks Lou and I ran around the flock, watching to see who needed assistance, observing new lambs and bottle feeding an increasing group of bottle-fed lambs in our kitchen. Now on my last day of work, Gala and I are weaning the lambs as they are old enough to be on their own. It’s exciting to see how much they have grown.
Farming is an amazing, involved and exhausting job so I plan to take some time before beginning to study Rural Land Management in September, something which I hope will give me new and exciting opportunities within the agricultural sector.
I would love to say thank you to the team, I’ve learned so much from everyone I have worked with. I cannot thank you enough for the way you have supported me during my recovery and since. I will remember this year because of you.
Good luck for your new adventures, Miriam! You've been a joy to work with and we'll all miss you. The whole team is looking forward to hear about the exciting things you'll be getting up to!
