Small beginnings...
Liz Charnell
Simply put, everything has to start from somewhere; be it the beginning of the universe or growing blueberries somewhere in that universe!
So, a moment of change – no blueberries to some blueberries. Easy. And unlike the universe we are starting ‘small’ – in fact four plants to be precise. As I’m not sure of the precise preparation required to create solar systems, suns and planets, I will stop there with the comparison. I am sure that there has to be some preparation for blueberries, their preference for acidic soil requires consideration for starters.
Lucky for these four new arrivals we have dug out a whole load of very persistent nettles plus the rhubarb crowns that were not exactly thriving. Some coffee grounds, ericaceous compost and a defence strategy (not yet determined) against the couch grass, creeping clover, bindweed, figwort etc etc etc….
And then patience, a letting go and wonder required. Perhaps in 2 years we will have our own blueberries!! Now there’s something to look forward to.
Seasons Greetings from Emma, Mandie and Liz…your gardeners.
