Arable update

MAYA LOCK

This year is very different to last in terms of the arable side on the farm. Last year, there was no rain at the start of the season, so nothing grew.

So far this year we’ve cut just under a third of our total first cut of silage (we tend to get two a year from most fields) and have already produced as many silage bales as we made in the whole of 2020!! The grass that is still to be cut and baled is looking great and a lot thicker and fuller than last year.

We usual cut some of the fields on the ‘home farm’, however in 2020 because of the dry weather, we didn’t even have enough pasture for the milking cows to graze, so couldn’t afford to put any aside for silage. However, so far this year, we’ve had good rain, so have already put aside four and maybe five fields to be mown for winter fodder.
